Safety tips for roadside work zone employees

by | Sep 13, 2019 | Accidents And Injuries

Working on a roadside construction team is a rewarding and dangerous job all rolled into one. You get to be part of a team that is repairing outdated infrastructure or building new roads in newly developed areas of Ohio. On the other hand, you are constantly exposed to the dangers of speeding vehicles and distracted drivers. Below, you will find some safety tips for roadside work zone employees.

First and foremost, always wear your personal protective equipment. Most of this will be issued by your employer. It includes a reflective vest and other reflective apparel, steel toed boots, goggles, a hard hat, gloves and more. If you will be working on the side of an overpass, it could also include a harness.

Always pay attention to what you are doing, especially if you are working with power tools or heavy machinery. You should not be using your cellphone or talking too much with co-workers. This can easily distract you from the task in front of you.

Be alert when working close to the edge of the construction zone. A distracted, impaired or speeding driver could enter the zone at any minute and without warning. Always look at the oncoming traffic when setting up or taking down the zone.

If your employer refuses to provide safety equipment or the proper markings for a work zone, do not begin work that day until the issue is resolved. You have the right to demand a safe work environment.

The next time you are assigned to a road work zone, be sure to follow the safety tips outlined in this post. You could wind up saving your life or the life of a co-worker. As always, if you are injured, call 911 immediately.
